The Tibetan Terrier originated in Tibet where they were believed to bring good luck and were companions to the monks. They were called "little people." They were never sold but were given as gifts in exchange for good deeds.
He is not a terrier at all, and is shown in the Non Sporting Group. He is a shaggy dog 14" - 16" in height at the shoulder and weighs 20-30 lbs. He is a sturdy, squarely built dog with very large flat feet and a tail that curls over his back. He is sweet and gentle and loves to play. He is happiest hanging out with his family. He is very intelligent and sensitive. He does not shed or have doggie odor. He is double coated with a soft undercoat and a long outer coat, which comes in a variety of colors including white, gray, black and sable with or without white or tan. He requires regular grooming to prevent matting. They can be very good watch dogs as they are quick to notice anything that is "not quite right," whether it be a stranger in the neighborhood or a car parked where it shouldn't be, they will alert us.
They can be very outgoing like Smokey and Shailey or they can be reserved at first with strangers like Lucy. They can also be quite willful, especially as puppies. They love the snow during the winter and will climb to the top of snow piles to oversee their domain. Some will bark while others will also "sing", which is an interesting combination of whines and howles. The breed is basically healthy but hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) do exist. All of our dogs have OFA certificates and CERF registered eyes. Tashi kennel works closely with other kennels in our effort to improve our lines. We strive in our breeding program to produce to the standard but temperament is equally important. We want happy, healthy, socialized puppies that can be show dogs as well as pets.
